The aging process is inevitable, but it is often a problem if it lasts too fast. Scientists find new drugs to slow the process, the material is only there on Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean. Drugs are then called Rapamycin is made from bacteria that live on Easter Island, a remote island in the Pacific Ocean belonging to the Polynesian group. In trials, these drugs can overcome the disease Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS).
HGPS is a rare genetic disorder which makes sufferers experience the process of aging so quickly that often die young, usually at age 12-something years. A very rapid aging is triggered by a protein called progerin. Rapamycin, dubbed 'youthful drug' works by getting rid of excessive progerin in HGPS patient's body. Reduced progerin causes the body's cells normally aging, not as fast when not received this drug.
Scientists from Harvard Medical School, Francis Collins, who studied the drug rapamycin hope someday could be produced widely. In addition to HGPS cure, the drug is expected to also be useful to prevent diseases that are triggered by the aging process. Other researchers, Dimitri Krainc said the findings were very useful because it can also inhibit the natural aging process. In normal people, progerin also generated a certain amount by the cells of the body as a byproduct.
"It increases the body's natural ability to dispose of such proteins so that the aging process in the organs of the body can be slowed and life expectancy in general will increase," said Krainc as quoted from the Telegraph, on Thursday (30/06/2011).
