Researchers in New Zealand say that children who sleep less at night time it most likely will be obese. Their report, published in the BMJ this site examines 244 children aged between three and seven years. The study says that sleep is more to do with a lower body weight, which could have an important impact on public health. Health experts in Britain say there is no harm in considering the relationship between sleep deprivation and ill health.
The children examined were weighed their body weight every six months. Height and amount of fat in the body or their body mass index were also measured. Their sleep habits and their physical activity levels are also recorded at the age of three, four and five years. The researchers found that children who sleep less at an early age they were more likely to have a Body Mass Index is higher at the age of seven years. In fact, this association continued when other risk factors such as gender and physical activity are also included in their study.
The reasons that this association is thought to cause children to have more time to eat and sleep. That's changing hormones that affect their appetite. Professor Francesco Cappuccio and Professor Michelle Miller of the University of Warwick in England said that future research should explore and validate a new method that focuses on behavior, not a drug. "In the meantime, there's no harm in giving advice to people that lack of sleep at night is likely to disturb the ongoing health of adults and children," said Cappuccio.
