Health problems in Indonesia is currently facing a new disease patterns. Non-communicable diseases continue to rise due to induced changes in people's lifestyles. Lifestyle in question is low-fiber diet, high in fat, and the use of cigarettes or tobacco growing. Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih during World No Tobacco Day (HTTS), in the region Cibubur, Tuesday (31/05/2011), explained how smoking is increasingly threatening the younger generation.
"Among the Indonesia's population aged over 15 years, 35 percent are smokers. And of the 10 boys over the age of 15, 6 to 7 people of whom smoke," Endang said in his speech. Based on data Riskesdas 2010, the prevalence of people aged 15 years and over who smoked per day reached 28.2 percent nationally. While based on the age of first smoking nationwide, the age group 15-19 years ranked highest with a prevalence reaching 43.3 per cent, followed by 10-14 years age group which reached 17.5 percent.
According to Endang, another situation is more worrying is, that there is a 85.4 percent active smokers smoke at home with family members, so that may be detrimental to the health of other family members especially children. "So, children exposed to smoke or as a passive smoker. Children will experience health problems such as lung growth is slow, prone to bronchitis, ear infections and so forth," he said.
Endang also stated that the average household expenditure tumah poor families to buy cigarettes far above the average expenditure for food ingredients such as proteins, vegetables or other. "So if people have money, first purchased the cigarettes. Of course, in addition to, not good for himself, his family too," he said.
Menkes added, more than 43 million Indonesian children living in a home with smokers and are exposed to cigarette smoke or as a passive smoker. Amounted to 37.3 percent reported students accustomed to smoking, and 3 out of 10 students first smoked at age below 10 years. This condition, according to Endang, because children and young people have been overwhelmed by the invitation to smoke by advertising, promotion and sponsorship is very intense. As a comparison revealed Endang, tobacco advertising restrictions in other countries has been limited. There's even a total ban, meaning, there can be absolutely no advertising or sponsorship.
"Because there is no place in other countries, the cigarette advertisements that went to Indonesia," he explained. Endang hope, for the younger generation to be smart, and see that smoking is not cool. "What is cool is not smoking because it realizes that it is unhealthy and shows that the younger generation is responsible for the health of himself," he said.
When disingung about how far government efforts to control health problems caused by tobacco, Endang admitted that his side has made various efforts including by developing a variety of tobacco control regulations, as contained in the Health Act No. 36 of 2009. "Then we also we are putting together the Draft Regulation (RPP) on securing material containing addictive substances in the form of tobacco products for health. RPP Hopefully this can be quickly completed a Government Regulation (PP)," he concluded.
